📋 THEMATIC OVERVIEW
🎯 CRITICAL HIT CHANCE VS CRITICAL HIT DAMAGE 🎯
Welcome to Week 5 of the SHD Training Series, Agents. Now that we have covered gear building and optimization in previous weeks, it is time to dive into one of the most fundamental damage mechanics in The Division 2 — Critical Hits. Understanding the difference between Critical Hit Chance and Critical Hit Damage, and more importantly how to balance them correctly, is the difference between a build that performs and a build that dominates. Whether you are a returning agent or brand new to endgame, this breakdown will sharpen your damage game immediately.
🔶 WHAT IS CRITICAL HIT CHANCE?
Critical Hit Chance determines how often your shots deal critical damage. Think of it as the frequency dial on your damage output — the higher it is, the more consistently you land those powerful critical hits.
Example in action:
• 50% CHC means roughly half of your shots will be critical hits
• 30% CHC means only around 3 out of every 10 shots crit
⚠️ The most important rule every agent must know:
Critical Hit Chance is CAPPED at 60%. Any CHC stacked beyond 60% is completely wasted and provides zero benefit. Always keep this cap in mind when building your gear.
🔶 WHAT IS CRITICAL HIT DAMAGE?
Critical Hit Damage determines how hard those critical hits actually hit. While CHC controls frequency, CHD controls power — and the difference it makes to your damage numbers is massive.
Example in action:
• Base weapon damage: 100,000
• +100% Critical Hit Damage applied
• Critical Hit result: 200,000 damage
The higher your CHD, the more devastating every critical hit becomes. This is where the real scaling of your damage output lives in endgame builds.
🔶 THE BALANCE RULE
The most effective builds in The Division 2 do not max out one stat at the expense of the other — they balance both. Here is the golden target range every agent should aim for:
✅ 50–60% Critical Hit Chance
✅ 150–200%+ Critical Hit Damage
What happens when the balance breaks:
• Too much CHC without CHD — You crit constantly but each crit hits like a wet newspaper. Consistent but weak.
• Too much CHD without CHC — When you do crit it hits like a truck, but you crit so rarely it barely matters.
• Balanced correctly — High frequency crits that each deal massive damage. This is what maximum average DPS looks like.
Balance is not optional at endgame. It is the foundation.
🔶 WHERE THESE STATS COME FROM
Agents have multiple sources to build their CHC and CHD from. Understanding all your sources allows you to stack efficiently without wasting attribute slots.
Sources of CHC and CHD:
• Weapon attributes — Primary and secondary rolls on your weapon
• Gear attributes — Major and minor rolls across your six gear pieces
• Weapon mods — Scopes, magazines, and underbarrel mods
• Brand set bonuses — Two and three piece bonuses from matching brands
• SHD Watch upgrades — Passive bonuses unlocked through Watch progression
Building a strong damage core means layering these sources together intentionally, not randomly.
🔶 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Even experienced agents fall into these traps. Here is what to watch out for:
❌ Going over the 60% CHC cap — Wasted attributes that could be CHD or other damage stats
❌ Ignoring CHD completely — High CHC with no CHD severely limits your damage ceiling
❌ Mixing random attributes without synergy — Each attribute should serve the build’s purpose
❌ Building damage without a plan — Random gear with damage stats is not the same as an optimized damage build
Remember: Consistency + Power = High DPS. Both halves of that equation matter.
🔶 AGENT TIP — THE CORRECT BUILDING ORDER
When optimizing a new build, always follow this priority order:
Step 1 — Reach the CHC cap first. Get as close to 60% Critical Hit Chance as possible through your gear, mods, and brand bonuses.
Step 2 — Stack CHD aggressively. Once your CHC is at or near cap, every remaining attribute slot that can roll CHD should roll CHD.
Step 3 — Fill remaining slots with supporting damage stats such as Weapon Damage, Headshot Damage, or build-specific bonuses.
This order ensures you are never wasting stats and always scaling in the most efficient direction.
🔶 WEEKLY REMINDER
⏰ SHD Training Series continues every Tuesday! Next week we break down Weapon Talents — the mechanics that truly define endgame builds. Make sure you are following the page so you do not miss it!

Key Takeaways:
✅ Critical Hit Chance controls how often you crit — capped hard at 60%
✅ Critical Hit Damage controls how hard those crits hit — no cap, stack aggressively
✅ Optimal target range is 50–60% CHC and 150–200%+ CHD
✅ Always reach the CHC cap first before stacking CHD
✅ Going over the 60% CHC cap wastes valuable attribute slots
✅ Balance between CHC and CHD produces the highest average DPS
✅ Sources include weapon attributes, gear attributes, mods, brand bonuses, and Watch upgrades
