The first week of April (around April 3rd) is set to completely reshape how agents power up, grind, and build in The Division 2. This is not a minor patch — this is a full endgame overhaul introducing a brand-new gear tier, a fresh core activity, and a game-changing build system that will redefine what it means to be optimized. Whether you’re a returning veteran or an active agent already grinding toward Expertise 30, this breakdown covers everything you need to know before the season drops. Note that all information is based on the PTS and is subject to change before full release.

🔶 PROTOTYPE GEAR — THE NEW POWER CEILING

The headline feature of Year 8 Season 1 is Prototype Gear — a new tier sitting above everything currently in the game.

What Makes It Different:

 Applies to high-end gear, gear sets, and named items (exotics excluded)

 Attributes can roll up to 1.5x to 2x stronger than current maximums

 The old maximum roll becomes the new minimum floor

Who Can Access It:

 Requires Level 40, SHD Watch unlocked, and Expertise Level 30

 Gear must be fully optimized before it can be converted

⚠️ Conversion is permanent — once a piece becomes Prototype, stats and talents are locked forever. Only the Augment slot can be modified afterward.

🔶 THE PROTO LAB — HOW UPGRADING WORKS

A brand-new Proto Lab tab has been added to the Tinkering Station for agents who have fully maxed their gear.

Conversion Cost:

 1 Prototype Core per item

 Prototype Cores are obtained by deconstructing Prototype gear (drops from Escalations)

What Happens When You Convert:

 One attribute is guaranteed to roll at Prototype maximum

 Named items (e.g., Contractor’s Gloves) always roll their yellow attribute at max

 Remaining attributes stay at their current max with a chance to roll higher

 There is a rare chance — approximately 1 in 15 to 20 items — to get a double max roll

👉 Perfect god-rolls are not guaranteed. Farming Escalations for better base drops will be the path to perfection.

🔶 THE AUGMENT SYSTEM — THE REAL GAME-CHANGER

Every Prototype item comes equipped with an Augment slot — essentially a second talent unique to the Prototype tier.

Example Augments Include:

 Echo — Bullets have a chance to hit twice

 Quantum — Chance to become damage immune

 Paradox — Refills your magazine while firing

 Trapper — Extends status effect durations

 Anomaly — Skills heal the agent

How Augments Work:

 Augments level from 1 to 10 through kills

 Rerolling an Augment resets ALL progress back to level 1

2 → 4 → 6 → 10 → 16 → 26 → up to 50 Prototype Cores per roll

Escalations is the new core endgame activity and the primary source of Prototype gear.

How It Works:

 10-tier mission system replaying main missions at increasing difficulty

 Escalation Tokens are required to start a run — higher tiers cost more tokens

 No checkpoints, timed runs, full wipe = mission failed and tokens lost

 Matchmaking available but disabled once the mission begins

Difficulty Scaling:

 Enemies gain more health, armor, and damage at higher tiers

 Enemy Mutators change how missions play — including Harvesters, Suppressors, Hot Foot, and Unyielding modifiers

 Tier 10 is designed for fully optimized, perfectly built agents
