🐺 THE DIVISION 2 SURVIVORS: KEY GAMEPLAY & MAP CONFIRMATIONS
Magnus Yansen (Creative Director on Survivors, and original Creative Director for The Division 1) joined the stream to provide the first major update on the project since its reveal at Gamescom in August.
🏢 DEVELOPMENT & MODES
Location Confirmed:
Magnus confirmed that the people working on the Survivors project are indeed located at Massive Entertainment (Sweden), signaling a significant new investment of resources. This represents the first time a core gameplay team has been active at Massive since around 2020 or 2021.
This is a major commitment from Ubisoft to The Division franchise.
⚔️ PvP AND PvE CONFIRMED
CRITICAL CONFIRMATION: Magnus confirmed that the new Survivors game mode will include both PvP and PvE options.
This addresses one of the biggest community questions since the announcement. Players will have choice in how they experience Survivors.
🤝 ENCOURAGING COLLABORATION (PvE MODE)
Design Philosophy:
In the PvE survival mode, the developers are focusing on improving collaboration between agents.
Problem Being Solved:
The original Division 1 Survival mode often incentivized Agents to compete against each other for loot and rewards, creating tension in what should have been a cooperative experience.
New Approach:
The Survivors PvE mode aims to encourage teamwork and cooperation rather than competition among teammates.
🌨️ ENVIRONMENTAL GAMEPLAY
❄️ WEATHER EFFECTS
Returning Feature:
The brutal snowstorms from the original Division 1 survival mode will return in Survivors!
Daytime Dynamics:
The team is also leaning into bright, crisp winter daytime environments, providing visual variety beyond constant darkness.
Dynamic Weather System:
Snowstorms can roll in at any time
Weather changes can happen even during daytime
Temperature drops during storms
Crucially: Weather affects NPC visibility range
This creates tactical opportunities where agents can use weather conditions to their advantage or must adapt their strategy when conditions change.
🗺️ TRANSFORMED DC
Overview
“DC is very much transformed” in the Survivors mode, offering new discoveries and environmental storytelling.
The Washington DC map players know from The Division 2 will be dramatically different in Survivors, providing a fresh experience even for veteran agents.
🚇 EXPANDED UNDERGROUND (HUGE CONFIRMATION!)
Major Announcement:
The existing underground network (sewers, service tunnels, etc.) is being significantly expanded.
What This Means:
✅ More traversal options when surface conditions are too severe
✅ Additional places to explore below ground
✅ Strategic choices between surface and underground routes
✅ Enhanced survival gameplay (seeking shelter from storms)
✅ New combat arenas and encounter locations
This represents a substantial expansion of playable space and adds vertical complexity to the survival experience.
🏛️ NEW FIGHT LOCATIONS
Inaccessible Areas Unlocked:
The mode will allow players to traverse and fight in locations that are not normally accessible in the main game.
Confirmed Example:
Visually Different White House: Players will be able to fight inside a transformed version of the White House
Interior spaces not available in base game
New environmental storytelling opportunities
Additional Implications:
Many other landmark locations may be opened up for exploration and combat that are currently blocked off in The Division 2’s main campaign.
👥 COMMUNITY & NEXT STEPS

🏢 SURVIVORS SUMMIT (POTENTIAL)
In-Person Meeting:
There are hints that selected ETF members may be invited to an in-person summit at Massive Entertainment (Sweden) next year.
Historical Context:
This would be the first major in-person meeting between developers and community since around 2019 (pre-pandemic).
Significance:
An in-person summit would represent a major commitment to community collaboration and indicates the importance Massive places on getting Survivors right.
📅 NEXT UPDATE
